Best Bites for a Day at the Beach: Frozen fruit

Frozen fruit

The thermometer can get pretty high when you’re sitting on the sand without any shade to help cool you down (unless you’ve smartly packed an umbrella). One of the quickest and healthiest ways to chill out is with frozen fruit: Grapes, pitted cherries, mango chunks and berries are nutritious treats that can lower your temperature in a flash. And trust me, these chilly produce picks can be as indulgent as ice cream. Try your best to keep your cooler out of direct sunlight and stash it with ice so it stays frozen for as long as possible.

Best Bites for a Day at the Beach: Refreshing Bevvies

Refreshing bevvies

I like to freeze a few plastic water bottles. (I let out a little water beforehand so they don’t explode once they expand). This is a double-duty hack—it saves space because the bottles serve as ice packs and you get to drink the chilled water as they start to melt.

For a shot of delicious flavor and refreshing hydration, I also like to bring along several cans of flavored sparkling water (of course, I’m totally biased to LaCroix). Stash whatever flavors you like best—LaCroix has a wide variety that are perfect for hot summer days. Most recently, their Nicola Coconut Cola has been transporting me from New York to the tropics with the pop of a can!

Best Bites for a Day at the Beach: DIY Trail Mix

DIY trail mix

This fuss-free trail mix is the perfect pick-me-up for car rides, plane trips and the beach. It’s super satisfying, easy to make, delicious to eat and portable. You can swap ingredients based on what you have on hand. If you’ll be out in the sun, omit the chocolate chips or stash your mouthwatering mix in the cooler

Best Bites for a Day at the Beach: Hummus and Veggies

Hummus and veggies

Veggies are always one of my go-to snacks—pepper strips, crunchy carrots, celery sticks, grape tomatoes and more. Pair with some creamy hummus for staying power, and you’ll be ready for wave-surfing and shell-searching. There are so many good versions out there, including this Edamame Hummus and Lentil Hummus spin. Or you can go with a traditional hummus, which involves chickpeas, tahini (sesame paste), lemon and garlic. Dipper’s choice.

Best Bites for a Day at the Beach: Watermelon and Feta

Watermelon-Feta Bites

Watermelon is the official fruit of summer so dig into its deliciousness. Jazz it up by pairing cubes with feta and fragrant mint…and bring along toothpicks for easy assembly and eating. For the ultimate experience, tote a small container of balsamic for dipping and drizzling. It’s insanely tasty and you’ll be the envy of neighboring beachgoers.

Best Bites for a Day at the Beach: Roasted Pepitas

Roasted pepitas

Pepitas are nutritious and scrumptious shell-off pumpkin seeds, and they can satisfy a craving for sweet and/or salty snack food (I’m looking at you chips, pretzels and cookies). Best part? They’re filled with protein, fiber and immune-boosting zinc. You can buy them already roasted or make a homemade version. I like to whip up two renditions—one spicy and one sweet. The sweet features a lip-smacking combo of cinnamon and sugar, while the spicy spin consists of a fiery mix of cumin and cayenne. Whip up one (or both) and bring a bag to enjoy as you watch the sun set.
