French Onion Soup Beyond Burger
Indulge in the appealing medley of French onion soup’s flavors without the need for a spoon!
Here, I’m paying tribute to the world of plant-based burgers by generously layering on the addictive and umami-rich goodness of caramelized onions. Oh, and let’s not forget the melty cheese of your choice (gruyere, Swiss, Munster, etc), to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Your only dilemma will be deciding whether to nestle your burger in a cozy bun or enjoying it with a fork and knife on a cushion of leafy greens. Enjoy!

French Onion Soup Beyond Burger
Ingredients
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 frozen Beyond Stack Burgers
- 1 ½ ounces Gruyere cheese*
- 2 whole-grain hamburger buns, optional
- *You can swap in Jarlsberg, Swiss or Muenster
Instructions
- Liberally mist a skillet with nonstick oil spray and warm over medium-high heat. Add sliced onion to the hot skillet and sauté for 17 to 20 minutes, until onion is golden brown and caramelized, stirring occasionally.
- If onion slices become dry at any point, mist with extra oil spray or add droplets of water to keep moist. Season with salt and pepper to taste and transfer to plate.
- Reapply oil spray to skillet and add frozen burger patties. Cook for 3 minutes on the first side, flip and cook the second side.
- When you hit the 1-minute mark on the second side, add a generous pile of sauteed onions on the top of each burger, followed by cheese.
- Cover skillet with a lid and continue to cook another 2 minutes to melt cheese and finish cooking burger.
- Transfer to a bed of greens or enjoy your French Onion Burger on a whole-grain bun!
We love this burger so much. It is delicious and juicy . . . We add pickle slices on the burger.-We have always served on a wholegrain bun. And we use ground turkey with extra-seasonings to make up for the lack of fat. I sometimes crave this burger. That is why I am making them tonight! Ym!
Hi Vicki. Yay! We’re so glad you’re enjoying this burger…and love all the suggestions to make it even more crave-worthy.
