This drunken fruit salad will get your party started! BONUS: It’s packed with nutrients and fiber, and gets even more delicious the longer the tequila and orange liquor mingle with the naturally sweet and juicy fruit.

This recipe is a total warm-weather win. Whether you’re hosting brunch, happy hour, or a backyard cookout, these skewers are as fun to eat as they are to serve. I like to nestle two in each margarita glass and pour a little of the leftover skinny margarita mixture over the top—it feels elevated but couldn’t be easier.

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • Vibrant and fun to serve: Threaded with colorful fruit and served in cocktail glasses, they’re sure to inspire smiles.
  • Customizable: Use your favorite fruit, swap in orange juice for the orange liqueur if you want, and adjust the soak time to control intensity.
  • Great for gatherings: The recipe yields 4 servings, but you can easily double or triple it for a crowd.
  • Nutrient-rich with a twist: Juicy fruits like kiwi, strawberries, and melon deliver fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants—and there’s no sugary syrups or agave into my “skinny margarita” mix.
Step 1: To a pitcher or bowl, add tequila, orange liquor (or orange juice), and ½ cup lime juice. Mix together.
Step 2: Add fruit chunks, making sure it’s submerged in the tequila mixture and chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour to overnight.

These Margarita-Infused Fruit Skewers are my go-to when I want something refreshing, festive…. and a little unexpected! There’s no added sugar, no syrupy mixers—just fresh, vibrant flavor that lets the boozy fruit do all the talking. (And yes—you can absolutely skip the tequila and orange liquor for a family-friendly version. In fact, I typically prep two bowls: one adults-only and one all-ages.) See recipe notes for a booze-free version!

A quick Joy tip

If you’re using grapes, pierce each one before adding them to the booze bowl, so they soak up more of the margarita mixture. It makes all the difference. To serve, slide the fruit onto skewers, nestle them in margarita glasses, and pour some a bit of the leftover citrus blend right on top. You’ll get that classic margarita experience—with way more texture and color…. and nutrition!

If you like salted rims (I prefer no salt, but most of my family members are #teamsalt all the way), just make sure to only salt the outer edge of the rim so the salt doesn’t fall into the drink and override the delicious flavor. I’m telling you, these sassy fruit “cocktails” are easy to make and such fun to devour!

Ready to turn your backyard hangout into full-blown Margaritaville—strictly adults only—don’t stop at the skewers! Keep the “eat your cocktail” energy going with my Margarita Watermelon Bowls (think juicy, boozy, and wildly refreshing) and scoop up some Margarita Guacamole. Because who says margaritas need a glass?!

Margarita-Infused Fruit Skewers

This drunken fruit salad will get your party started! BONUS: It’s packed with nutrients and fiber, and gets even more delicious the longer the tequila and orange liquor mingle with the naturally sweet, juicy fruit.
Yield: 4 servings
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Refrigerate Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup tequila
  • ¾ cup orange liquor*
  • ½ cup lime juice
  • 3 cups cut up fruit, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, kiwi, whole strawberries, blackberries or grapes*
Ingredient Details to Know
*You can swap in orange juice for the orange liquor
*If using grapes, pierce a hole in the end of each to better absorb the booze.

Instructions

  • To a pitcher or bowl, add tequila, orange liquor (or orange juice), and ½ cup lime juice. Mix together.
  • Add fruit chunks, making sure it’s submerged in the tequila mixture and chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour to overnight.
  • Using a slotted spoon, remove the fruit and place on a plate. Pierce ~ 4 to 6 pieces fruit per skewer and lay 2 skewers in each margarita glass (you’ll have about 8 skewers total). Pour the remaining tequila mix into each of the glasses over the fruit (~1/2 cup per glass).

Notes

To line glass rims with its signature salt, mix a few tablespoons kosher salt with ~ ¼ to ½ teaspoon lime zest and crush, using your fingers or a muddler (this will help it to blend together and better stick to the rims). Make a small slice in the middle of a leftover lime wedge and run it around the rim to moisten it. Then, dip the “outside” of the rim in the lime salt. It’s important to keep the salt on the outside of the rim so it doesn’t fall into your delish drink and ruin it.
For a virgin rendition, soak fruit in 1 cup OJ + ½ cup lime juice.
