Looking to slash your starch intake? I have four easy tricks that will help you cut carbs (and calories) without making you feel deprived. Ready to dig in…and save? Enjoy!

Swap a white roll for a scooped whole-grain roll

Instead of: A white hero roll or bagel

Enjoy: A whole grain (scooped) roll or bagel

Whenever you have the choice, go for whole grains. That’s because they contain fiber, B vitamins and other health-boosting nutrients that are stripped from the grains used to make refined white products.

For a weight loss edge, try scooping out the center of your whole grain roll or bagel. Doing so will end up saving you about 100 calories each time.

Swap white rice for cauliflower rice

Instead of: White rice

Enjoy: Cauliflower rice

Slash the carb count from this standard side by making your own cauliflower rice. Check out these numbers: 1 cup of cooked white rice packs 220 calories while 1 cup of cauliflower rice has just 35 calories. Try my delicious and easy recipe.

Swap a straight cereal pour for one using a measuring cup

Instead of: Pouring cereal straight from the box
Use: A measuring cup

I know, this one sounds pretty straightforward and unremarkable, but most of us over-pour our breakfast cereal on a regular basis. In fact, when we pour cereal straight from the box or container, we tend to serve ourselves two the three times more than what the appropriate serving size is. Which means two to three times more calories, carbs, sugar, salt–even milk to wash it all down. Yikes!

My simple solution can help you keep portions, and therefore, calories, in check. Leave a 1-cup scooper right in the cereal box (or container) and a ½-cup scooper in the oatmeal canister. Another helpful tip: Flag the appropriate portion on the inside of your cereal bowl with a black marker.

Swap a burrito for a burrito bowl

Instead of: A burrito
Enjoy: A burrito bowl

Burritos have become a buzz-worthy option for a quick lunch or dinner, thanks to the increasing number of Mexican and Tex-Mex fast-food joints opening up.

Instead of ordering a burrito wrapped in a giant tortilla (which, alone, is 300 calories at Chipotle), stuffed with about 1 cup of rice (another 210 cals), have a “bowl.” Simply pour your favorite burrito fixins into a bowl, and go easy on the rice with just ¼ cup. (Switch to brown rice if that’s an option.) Enjoy!
