Watermelon Margarita Bowls
Here’s a fun one: a tequila-infused bowl of juicy watermelon balls! This vibrant, boozy treat is the perfect way to kick off any summer gathering. Picture yourself lounging by the pool or hosting a lively backyard bash, all while enjoying margarita-soaked watermelon bites. Not only is it an instant conversation starter, but it’s also a refreshing indulgence with just the right amount of sass.

Quick Note: This recipe makes enough for both halves of a large watermelon. If you’re hosting a smaller crowd or just want to make a single bowl, simply use half the watermelon and be sure to halve the margarita mixture—you’ll still end up with around 40 delicious, booze-infused balls.
I’ve provided nutrition info per piece at the bottom of the page, not because one piece is a serving (it’s not!), but to make it easy for you to calculate based on how many pieces you actually enjoy. So whether you’re tracking calories, macros, or micronutrients, you can adjust as needed (no judgment here!).
You’ll also find tips on storing leftovers, making a booze-free version, and prepping this recipe ahead of time in the notes section below!

Watermelon Margarita Bowls
Ingredients
- 1 large watermelon, sliced in half
- 1 cup tequila
- ¾ cup orange liqueur, or orange juice
- ½ cup lime juice
- Optional: Coarse kosher or sea salt and lime zest for garnish
Instructions
- Scoop the watermelon: Start by creating watermelon balls using an ice cream scoop. As you scoop, place the balls into a large bowl, leaving any juice behind in the watermelon halves (the juice will add incredible flavor when it mingles with the margarita mix!). Then, add these balls back into your hollowed-out watermelon halves, aka “watermelon bowls”
- Prepare the margarita mix. In the same bowl you used for the watermelon balls (because who wants to clean extra dishes?), combine the tequila, orange liqueur or juice, and lime juice. Stir well to mix.
- Pour the margarita mix into the hollowed-out watermelon halves, making sure the balls are fully coated in the mixture. Cover the watermelon halves and refrigerate for at least an hour—though you can let them chill for several hours if you want them extra cold and flavorful.
- Just before serving, sprinkle with coarse salt and lime zest for additional flavor and fun. You can also fancy up the presentation by garnishing with some fresh mint leaves.

Would a mini melon baller work with this recipe rather than an ice cream scoop?
Hi Pam, yes you can use a mini melon baller! The balls/chunks would just be smaller and you’d have many more! Hoping you love the recipe!
