Magic Shell Yogurt Cups
I love a simple and indulgent sweet treat that’s single-serve and packed with protein. This viral recipe checks off all the boxes. The yogurt gets nice and cold while the nutty chocolate coating hardens, creating a thick layer of magic shell deliciousness. I am obsessed.

When I see a viral recipe making waves online, I’m always tempted to try it to see if it’s worth the hype. I love taking trendy ideas and giving them a nutritious upgrade—keeping all the fun and indulgence while sneaking in wholesome ingredients that make you feel great. For me, it’s all about making healthy eating easy, exciting, and totally doable.
I love using no-added sugar Greek yogurt and dark chocolate chips because they deliver a perfect balance of creamy richness and chocolatey indulgence. However, the beauty of this recipe is its flexibility—you can use your favorite brand of yogurt, whether it’s vanilla, flavored, or even plant-based, and opt for lighter milk chocolate chips if you prefer a sweeter taste.

This sweet treat isn’t just irresistibly delicious—it’s also incredibly easy to make. With just a few simple ingredients (most of which you probably already have on hand), you can whip it up in no time. The creamy yogurt serves as a protein-packed base, while the chocolate adds a rich sweetness, and the nuts bring a satisfying crunch for the perfect texture. It’s the ultimate combo of creamy, crunchy, and chocolatey goodness in every spoonful!

I have to say, part of the joy of this recipe is how downright fun it is to break! Cracking through that thick chocolate layer with your spoon is incredibly satisfying, and it brings a playful element to an otherwise simple snack. Perfect for both kids and kids at heart! 😉
This recipe is also a great to make with friends or family. You can set up a DIY magic shell station with different yogurt flavors, melty chocolate, and toppings (nuts, granola, sea salt, etc.), and let everyone build their own unique creation. It’s a fun activity for a weekend gathering, and it guarantees everyone munches on a treat they love.

Magic Shell Yogurt Cups
Ingredients
- 1 (5-ounce) single container Greek yogurt, 2%
- 1 to 2 tablespoons chocolate chips, melted
- Chopped nuts, optional
Instructions
- Mix your favorite single-serve yogurt and pour melted chocolate over the top. Gently spread the chocolate so it coats the top of the yogurt, and sprinkle chopped nuts.
- You can place in fridge or freezer for just about 15-20 minutes and the chocolate will harden. I liked the freezer because it chilled and firmed the yogurt a bit, making it richer and more indulgent. BUT, don’t forget about it in the freezer or the yogurt will become rock solid. You can always keep it in the fridge, and if you prefer it firmed like me, transfer to freezer 15 mins before serving.
- When the chocolate top layer hardens, it can be tough to break with a spoon. Instead, I like to lift up the top chocolate coating (it’ll lift easily when its firmed) and break it apart with my fingers so I have lots of bite-size pieces with every delicious bite.

I’m completely OBSESSED with these Magic Shell Yogurt Cups! The creamy yogurt paired with the crunchy chocolate-nutty topping is an unbelievably delicious combo—it’s my new go-to sweet and healthy indulgence! ❤️
Thank you so much, Jen! We love hearing that you’re as obsessed as we am! That creamy-crunchy combo really is something special, isn’t it? So glad it’s become your new favorite sweet treat! ❤️

can I use 1% or no fat Greek yogurt?
Hi Peggy. This will work with ANY favorite flavored yogurt—nonfat, 1%, 2%, full-fat. Joy recommends flavored for the ease; she uses a no-added-sugar flavored yogurt, sweetened with stevia or monk fruit. We hope you love the recipe as much as we do. Please let us know what you think if you decide to give it a shot!

Will peanut butter or butterscotch chips work in place of chocolate? Unfortunately, I cannot have chocolate (caffeine).
Hi Judi. We haven’t had a chance to test this recipe with peanut butter or butterscotch chips yet, but Joy thinks it should work well….and it sounds delicious! If you decide to try it, please let us know how it turns out!

I keep chocolate chips in the freezer, so since you say to ‘lift and break up the chocolate in pieces to have for each bite’, I think I will just top my yogurt cup with chocolate chips and nuts.
Hi Barbara. That’s a great shortcut and it sounds just as delicious!

I made this today after lunch with chopped bittersweet chocolate and toasted pecan pieces. What a delicious dessert! I used Fage plain yogurt that I stirred a teaspoon of vanilla brean paste into before topping with t(he melted chocolate and nuts. So easy and the results were so good, it will become a regular in my home. Thanks for the healthy pudding option. (I took a photo, but didn’t see anywhere to attach it.)
Hi Chef K, thanks for your sweet note! We’re so glad the recipe was a hit…and that it will be on repeat in your house! We love your delicious twists, too! We’ll be looking into an option to add photos—great idea! Thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts with us!
