My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Our romcom round-up wouldn’t be complete without a mention of the highest-grossing romcom of all time! Toula Portokalos, played by Nia Vardalos is a 30-year-old Greek American woman, who meets and falls in love with non-Greek Ian Miller, portrayed by John Corbett. Of course, this is to the dismay of her strict Greek parents, whom she still lives with and works for at their family-owned diner.
The scene where Ian’s parents meet Toula’s parents is so side-splittingly funny, you’ll be Bundt over laughing. Ian’s mom presents Toula’s mom with a homemade Bundt cake, but Toula’s mom has a hard time understanding, and questions, “bun? bunk?” prompting a hysterical back and forth. The movie poses the question: Can love transcend cultural differences—and ultimately proves that it most definitely can, while still maintaining family traditions.
