Looking for a unique appetizer or snack? These “Figs in Blankets” are a delicious twist on a classic, using fresh figs for a fun, slightly sweet, savory bite. If you haven’t worked with figs before, this is the perfect recipe to dive in. Fresh figs are typically available late summer through early fall, and they come with some impressive health benefits, including being rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential minerals.

When buying fresh figs, look for ones that are plump, soft (but not mushy), and have smooth skin. Fresh figs are delicate, so handle them with care. Remember, this recipe works best with larger figs, as they’re easier to slice and wrap.

And don’t worry if you’re cooking for one or an entire party — this recipe is super flexible. You can make just a few fancy figs or scale it up as much as you need!

Goat cheese is my pick here, but feel free to swap in softened cream cheese or ricotta if that sounds more appealing. And if you want to take these to the next level, drizzle on my hot honey for a spicy-sweet kick. Regular honey or a balsamic glaze will work perfectly too!

Bacon Wrapped Figs with Goat Cheese

These “Figs in Blankets” are a delicious twist on a classic, using fresh figs for a fun, slightly sweet, savory bite
Yield: 5 servings
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 5 large fresh figs, stems removed and sliced in half
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons goat cheese
  • 3 slices turkey bacon, uncooked
  • 1 tablespoon honey or hot honey
  • Optional: chopped chives, basil, or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a small baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
  • Prepare the figs by slicing off the stem and cutting each fig in half lengthwise.
  • Spread about 1 teaspoon of goat cheese on the cut side of each fig half, using a small knife or tiny spoon.
  • Cut the bacon slices in half lengthwise to create long thin strips. Then, slice the long strips horizontally, giving you 12 pieces of bacon. Take each fig half and wrap it with a piece of bacon, tucking the ends underneath to secure them. Place each wrapped fig on the baking sheet with the seam side down.
  • Bake for 15-18 minutes until the bacon is crisp and sizzling.
  • Finish by drizzling with honey (or balsamic glaze) and sprinkling with your choice of herbs. Serve warm!

Notes

Storage:
If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for about 5 minutes to maintain the crispy texture.
Variations:
Swap goat cheese for softened light cream cheese or part-skim ricotta for a milder flavor. Turkey bacon keeps it light, but you can use regular bacon if you’d like. Try topping with hot honey for a spicy kick or a tangy balsamic glaze for a different flavor profile.
Dietary considerations:
• If you’re following a gluten-free diet, be sure to carefully read the packaging for each ingredient. While these foods are inherently gluten-free, gluten can sometimes be added during processing for a variety of reasons, including for flavor and consistency.
