Ingredients
1 ½large oranges or 2 medium
1750 mlbottle red wine
2cinnamon sticks
5whole cloves
2star anise
2tablespoonshoney or maple syrup
Instructions
Cut oranges into segments and remove the outside peel. Slice segments in half, add to the bottom of a large saucepan and muddle to release their natural juices. Pour in the wine, spices and honey. Gently mix everything together.
Heat over medium flame until you see the tiniest of bubbles form (it’s important to watch the pan and catch the beginning of a gentle simmer in order to prevent the alcohol from burning off). Reduce heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer for just 5 to 10 minutes.
Strain the mixture, discard solid pieces, and pour into glasses. Garnish with optional star anise, orange slices, cinnamon sticks or anything else you prefer.
