Here’s how to infuse cozy feels into your holiday festivities— make some Mulled Wine. It warms the soul with each spicy and robust sip. It’s a much bolder and intense cocktail compared to sipping regular wine, which makes it feel special and slows down your sipping experience… so it lingers all evening. And don’t get me started on the delicious aroma that fills your kitchen! Just be sure to lower the heat as soon as you see the tiniest bubbles form in order to prevent the alcohol from burning off.

Here, I use FitVine Wine’s Holiday Red, which offers a full-bodied flavor, but it would be equally delish with their more fruit-forward varietals like Red Blend, Sauvignon Blanc, or Chardonnay (yes, white works too!) I loooove FitVine Wines for their complete transparency and attention to detail during processing (no flavor additives or preservatives go into their wine, and therefore, far less sugar and histamines end up in your glass compared to many lower-price-point competitors). In fact, I decided to let the wine shine, and skipped the addition of brandy which is typically found in mulled wine recipes. Also, FitVine Wine is just about $14.99 per bottle and if you’d like to give it a try, definitely use my discount code “HolidayJoy” for 15% off from now through January 1st! Click here to order.

Cheers to a happy holiday season!

This recipe makes 4 servings
Ingredients:
  • • 1 ½ large oranges or 2 medium
  • • 1 (750 ml) bottle red wine*
  • • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • • 5 whole cloves
  • • 2 star anise
  • • 2 Tablespoons honey

*I use FitVine Wine Holiday Red to create this rendition but it also works perfectly with their Red Blend, Sauvignon Blanc, or Chardonnay.

Preparation:

Cut oranges into segments and remove the outside peel.  Slice segments in half, add to the bottom of a large saucepan and muddle to release their natural juices. Pour in the wine, spices and honey. Gently mix everything together.

Heat over medium flame until you see the tiniest of bubbles form (it’s important to watch the pan and catch the beginning of a gentle simmer in order to prevent the alcohol from burning off). Reduce heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer for just 5 to 10 minutes. Strain the mixture, discard solid pieces, and pour into glasses. Garnish with optional star anise, orange slices, cinnamon sticks or anything else you prefer.
